(Loisaida United Neighborhood Gardens, Inc) was founded in 2011 to strengthen our community by promoting, protecting and preserving the gardens and greening on the Lower East Side. LUNGS works to unite the gardens through cooperation, coordination and communication. We believe that permanent community gardens and public green spaces are necessary for a healthy New York City.

ON THE EDGE

LUNGS’ Lucky 13th Annual Harvest Arts Festival finds us on the edge.
Elections are looming, the weather is challenging and the City of Yes is threatening our community gardens.
I’m not sure Mayor Eric Adams knows what he wants or what he is doing. On August 21, he issued an executive order to require all city agencies to review city owned property for potential housing development.
NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue supported Adams’ order as “an important step in addressing New York City’s affordable housing crisis.” 
 
On April 22, Governor Hochul announced a package of programs and initiatives to create new housing, including affordable housing, in New York City. It was immediately denounced by This sham of a housing deal will do absolutely nothing to make housing more affordable and keep New Yorkers in their homes. It is nothing more than a massive giveaway to the real estate industry.”
 
It is ridiculous to consider destroying gardens to build housing. In 2021, the city housing agency said the number of potential vacancies as almost 89,000 units. It was reported at least 26,000 apartments are being warehoused by landlords.
 
In 1996, Giuliani was mayor, and he tried to auction off every community garden across the city to developers. The gardens were listed by the city as empty lots.
 
We cannot sit back and wait to have our gardens listed as available. The past tells us we have to be Pro-active. We’ve got to make some noise.
That is why, in the middle of our Festival,  LUNGS is convening a city-wide community gardener meeting to discuss what needs to be done. It is important to hear each other out and to stand together. Sunday, September 22 at 3pm at Green Oasis.
