“ Help Ourselves”

“Help Ourselves” is a youth empowerment group involved with creative activism in diverse communities. In collaboration with Children’s Magical Garden, they will be inviting local Artists to create spontaneous works of art alongside audience participants and guests!

RAIN OR SHINE

At times, being a performance artist can feel more like being a failed librarian. This series is a small contribution to the historical record of performance art in New York City. Twelve artists total, four per night.
Each performance will be lovingly documented and the video archived on YouTube.
PERFORMERS:
Jenna Kline’s most important tool is her body. Nightmares, memories and heartbreak fuel her work. Her body is a sculpture, storyteller, and most importantly, an instrument to connect with her audience. The performances are an outlet to create an expression of raw emotion. The goal is to achieve emotional enlightenment. Once she reaches this state, she is her most genuine, transparent and true self. Wearing her heart on her sleeve for all to see. Exhausted and sweating and she has transcended her body and has become a sweaty, fleshy creature. The air is left with lingering aroma of copper, fried foods and hand sanitizer.
Quinn Dukes is a multimedia performance artist, activist and curator based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work addresses human connection, social injustice and ritual. In 2014, following a heated discussion about the death of performance art, Dukes founded Performance Is Alive. She is a tireless advocate for performance art and higher education via appointments at Grace Exhibition Space and the School of Visual Arts.
Sophia Mak is here and creates, makes and performs. They have made their home in Baltimore City for the past 7 years but have recently moved back to New York to apply knife and chopstick to perceptions and assumptions. Sophia investigates issues of race, gender, class, sexuality and intergenerational trauma through performance and invokes the stories of their ancestors to present new narratives. Their eyes are open and they are taking in the changing landscape of city neighborhoods, learning about the role that art plays in it all, and trying to listen real hard to the growing pains, unacknowledged histories, and the rumbling, crumbling walls that have heard stories of multiple life times.
Zavé Martohardjono is an interdisciplinary artist interested in geopolitics, social justice, queer glam, and embodied healing. Zavé is currently in residence at The Bronx Museum of the Arts through the BxMA Co-Lab residency. Zavé was a Gibney Dance Work Up 3.0 artist (2017), has had residencies at The Shandaken Project at Storm King (2016), La MaMa (2016), Chez Bushwick (2015), and was a Lambda Literary Fellow (2015). Among many venues, they’ve performed at BAAD!, Boston Center for the Arts, Center for Performance Research, Gibney Dance, Issue Project Room, Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Movement Research at Judson Church, Panoply Performance Laboratory, Recess, and the Wild Project.

FIRE BUG
Multi-Media Performance by Ethan Weinstock

Fire Bug, a new multimedia performance by Ethan Weinstock, explores the circumstances behind a string of 70 cases of arson that took place in the small town of Coatsville, PA between 2008 and 2009. To date, seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the fires but many of the incidents remain unsolved and many questions are still unanswered. Ethan is a Brooklyn, NY based artist who has previously shown work at the Joe’s Pub, The BFI Flare London Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and MIX NYC Queer Experimental Film Festival.
