How to use the bokashi microbes to improve your soil, as well as, do non-food-waste bokashi composting.
Bring your own items (bottles and ingredients) and together we’ll make the bokashi ferments (Activated EM and/or EM•5). Bottle suggestions (type and size): – Type: seltzer water bottles (HDPE) since they are designed to handle the carbonation/gas pressure buildup. (Glass bottles are only recommended if an airlock can be used with it.) – Size: either 16.9 fl oz (500 ml), 1 liter (or 1 quart), or 2-liter bottle.
Ingredients (% of the volume or per volume of the bottle): Activated EM: blackstrap molasses (5%), EM•1 Microbial Inoculant (5%), and sea salt (2 tsp/liter). EM•5: blackstrap molasses (5%), EM•1 Microbial Inoculant (5%), apple cider vinegar (5%), 40% alcohol (5%) (e.g., vodka, tequila, whiskey), garlic cloves (1 clove/liter), and hot spicy peppers (3 or more/liter, can more different kinds, should be cayenne or hotter peppers).
We will make Activated EM (i.e., the bokashi microbes, aka bokashi spray) and the EM•5 foliar spray and show how to use them for gardening, plant care, soil improvement, and composting plant clippings, twigs and branches (without food waste).

LUNGS’ Lucky 13th Annual Harvest Arts Festival finds us on the edge. Elections are looming, the weather is challenging and the City of Yes is threatening our community gardens. I’m not sure Mayor Eric Adams knows what he wants or what he is doing. On August 21, he issued an executive order to require all city agencies to review city owned property for potential housing development. NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue supported Adams’ order as “an important step in addressing New York City’s affordable housing crisis.”
On April 22, Governor Hochul announced a package of programs and initiatives to create new housing, including affordable housing, in New York City. It was immediately denounced by This sham of a housing deal will do absolutely nothing to make housing more affordable and keep New Yorkers in their homes. It is nothing more than a massive giveaway to the real estate industry.”
It is ridiculous to consider destroying gardens to build housing. In 2021, the city housing agency said the number of potential vacancies as almost 89,000 units. It was reported at least 26,000 apartments are being warehoused by landlords.
In 1996, Giuliani was mayor, and he tried to auction off every community garden across the city to developers. The gardens were listed by the city as empty lots.
We cannot sit back and wait to have our gardens listed as available. The past tells us we have to be Pro-active. We’ve got to make some noise. That is why, in the middle of our Festival, LUNGS is convening a city-wide community gardener meeting to discuss what needs to be done. It is important to hear each other out and to stand together. Sunday, September 22 at 3pm at Green Oasis.

Here’s one I hope appeals to Gardners: by Mary Oliver LINES WRITTEN IN THE DAYS OF GROWING DARKNESS Every year we have been witness to it: how the world descends
into a rich mass, in order that it may resume. And therefore who would cry out
to the petals on the ground to stay, knowing as we must, how the vivacity of what was is married
to the vitality of what will be? I don’t say it’s easy, but what else will do
if the love one claims to have for the world be true?

Sat 9/28, 2–4 pm. Intentional Mending [El Sol Brillante Jr]
“Intentional Mending” It is a form of mending that is not disguised, but shown. Often with interesting stitching. It has a long history in Japan. Also known as Boro or Sashiko.
There is a resurgence in popularity in the art of mending. Before the age of disposable fashion, our grandmothers bought good clothes and, as they became worn, they mended them. They darned socks and learned how to match fabrics and patterns so mending could only be seen with close inspection. The beauty of mending clothes is in preserving old favorites with slow, meditative stitches that extend the life of garments or home accessories.

The Deplorables & The Despicables. 66 minutes . A documentary shot in 2017 in Washington, DC at Trump’s Inauguration, Saturday, January 20, followed by The Women’s March, Sunday, January 21. “The Deplorables and Despicables” is a mashup, a shout out, a hootenanny, a hymn, a hip hop poem to a country in need of inspiration. It’s a primer for the voting public. It’s a cautionary tale of the future we are now living.
This lovely film retraces the history of the Centre Tyabala de Guinée and l’école fula flute through the eyes of its students and teachers. The director artfully weaves the story of children growing into accomplished artists through a decade’s worth of clips and interviews.
