ON THE EDGE
LUNGS’ LUCKY 13th Annual Harvest Arts Festival finds us on the edge. Elections are looming, the weather is erratic, and the City of Yes is threatening our community gardens.
On August 21, Mayor Eric Adams issued an executive order requiring all city agencies to review city owned property for potential housing development. NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue praised Adams’ order as “an important step in addressing New York City’s affordable housing crisis.”
Which makes any community gardener with a sense of history very suspicious.
It is ridiculous to consider destroying gardens to build housing. Our gardens serve multiple purposes: they provide critical free, green space for socializing, exercise, relaxation, and growing food in neighborhoods underserved by the Parks Department.
But the gardens are prizes that developers drool over.
In 1996, Giuliani was mayor, and he tried to auction off every community garden across the city to developers. The gardens were listed by the city as empty lots. Gardeners mobilized city-wide, demonstrations, pranks, and arrests followed. We lost some gardens but ultimately prevailed.
In February 2024, it was reported that at least 26,000 apartments were being warehoused by landlords. I’m not sure Mayor Eric Adams knows what he wants or what he is doing.
The garden licenses we signed with the Parks Department state, “this License is terminable at will by the Commissioner in his or her discretion at any time, upon sixty (60) days written notice, and Licensee shall have no recourse of any nature whatsoever by reason of such termination.”
We are the biggest community garden program in the country — and yet we are not safe. The past tells us we have to be proactive. We cannot sit back and wait to have our gardens listed as available. We’ve got to make some noise.
This might be a good thing. We need to re-energize, mobilize again. Covid has led to complacency. Gardens are all about renewal and resilience; now we offer resistance. We envision a green, healthy city. We must be prepared to stand up for ourselves and our community. We welcome allies and invite new blood to join us.
That is why, in the middle of our 13th Festival, LUNGS is convening a city-wide community gardener meeting to discuss what needs to be done. It is important to hear each other out and to stand together. Sunday, September 22 at 3pm at Green Oasis, 370 E. 8th St between Avenues C & D. All are welcome to attend.

Starting with Bomba, which captured his interest in music at a young age, Puerto Rican folklore helped him find his way through the tumultuous era in the Lower East Side. Kiki & The Fellas now play a vibrant mix of boogaloo, son, cha-cha-cha and boleros. Their performances are full of energy and spontaneity, featuring call and response and improvised elements to engage the crowd. Kiki and his crew will bring this Loisaida-Latin groove out for this show in the garden.

LUNGS’ LUCKY 13th Annual Harvest Arts Festival finds us on the edge. Elections are looming, the weather is erratic, and the City of Yes is threatening our community gardens.
On August 21, Mayor Eric Adams issued an executive order requiring all city agencies to review city owned property for potential housing development. NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue praised Adams’ order as “an important step in addressing New York City’s affordable housing crisis.”
Which makes any community gardener with a sense of history very suspicious.
It is ridiculous to consider destroying gardens to build housing. Our gardens serve multiple purposes: they provide critical free, green space for socializing, exercise, relaxation, and growing food in neighborhoods underserved by the Parks Department.
But the gardens are prizes that developers drool over.
In 1996, Giuliani was mayor, and he tried to auction off every community garden across the city to developers. The gardens were listed by the city as empty lots. Gardeners mobilized city-wide, demonstrations, pranks, and arrests followed. We lost some gardens but ultimately prevailed.
In February 2024, it was reported that at least 26,000 apartments were being warehoused by landlords. I’m not sure Mayor Eric Adams knows what he wants or what he is doing.
The garden licenses we signed with the Parks Department state, “this License is terminable at will by the Commissioner in his or her discretion at any time, upon sixty (60) days written notice, and Licensee shall have no recourse of any nature whatsoever by reason of such termination.”
We are the biggest community garden program in the country — and yet we are not safe. The past tells us we have to be proactive. We cannot sit back and wait to have our gardens listed as available. We’ve got to make some noise.
This might be a good thing. We need to re-energize, mobilize again. Covid has led to complacency. Gardens are all about renewal and resilience; now we offer resistance. We envision a green, healthy city. We must be prepared to stand up for ourselves and our community. We welcome allies and invite new blood to join us.
That is why, in the middle of our 13th Festival, LUNGS is convening a city-wide community gardener meeting to discuss what needs to be done. It is important to hear each other out and to stand together. Sunday, September 22 at 3pm at Green Oasis, 370 E. 8th St between Avenues C & D. All are welcome to attend.

Starting with Bomba, which captured his interest in music at a young age, Puerto Rican folklore helped him find his way through the tumultuous era in the Lower East Side. Kiki & The Fellas now play a vibrant mix of boogaloo, son, cha-cha-cha and boleros. Their performances are full of energy and spontaneity, featuring call and response and improvised elements to engage the crowd. Kiki and his crew will bring this Loisaida-Latin groove out for this show in the garden.

MM Serra is an experimental filmmaker, curator and was the Executive Director of Film-Makers’ Cooperative until March 2023. Serra has created over 32 short documentary films that have screened at festivals including Sundance, The New York Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival and at the Louvre, Paris. She was awarded the Emily Harvey Foundation Venice Residency in 2023. On May 27, at the Millennium Film Workshop she had a retrospective of her films curated by Erica Schreiner. March 16, 2024, the Society of Cinema and Media Studies hosted a panel discussion on MM Serra’s films and her years as Executive Director of the FMC. In 2024, she was awarded a New York State Council on the Arts Individual Arts grant to create a film on community gardens.
This lovely film retraces the history of the Centre Tyabala de Guinée and l’école fula flute through the eyes of its students and teachers. The director artfully weaves the story of children growing into accomplished artists through a decade’s worth of clips and interviews.

“Intentional Mending” It is a form of mending that is not disguised, but shown. Often with interesting stitching. It has a long history in Japan. Also known as Boro or Sashiko.
There is a resurgence in popularity in the art of mending. Before the age of disposable fashion, our grandmothers bought good clothes and, as they became worn, they mended them. They darned socks and learned how to match fabrics and patterns so mending could only be seen with close inspection. The beauty of mending clothes is in preserving old favorites with slow, meditative stitches that extend the life of garments or home accessories.

KID JAVA is a NYC‑based band that plays “Blue Note Americana”, ie., music that is deeply indebted to the blues, but mix it up with other rootsy genres and often with a contemporary feel. Sometimes we’ll play a down-home traditional blues, other times more swing-oriented material, and then there is the New Orleans second-line or funk tune thrown in to keep things lively.

Come celebrate the Equinox when Jazz returns to its roots with a vibrant and danceable mix of music of Guinea and Mali with a jazz inflection.
Source, a standard formation of bass, drums, keyboards, and winds was founded by Quebecois flutist Sylvain Leroux and evolved into the explorative African Jazz unit that held fort at the Zinc Bar for more than a decade. With Mamadou Ba (bass), Brittany Anjou* (piano, keyboards) and Andy Algire (drums), Source delivers a message of human spirit and of individual and collective creativity demonstrating how different cultures can meet and communicate through their personal relationship to music.
